In organic chemistry[2], acetyl (ethanoyl), is a functional group[3], the acyl[4] of acetic acid[5], with chemical formula[6] -COCH3. It is sometimes abbreviated as Ac (not to be confused with the element[7] actinium[8]). The acetyl radical contains a methyl[9] group single-bonded to a carbonyl[10]. The carbon[11] of the carbonyl has a lone electron[12] available, with which it forms a chemical bond[13] to the remainder R of the molecule.
